International Defensive Pistol Association

Defensive Pistol Shooting was founded as a sport in 1996. It is shot using basic equipment including full – charge service ammunition to solve simulated “real world” self-defense scenarios. Shooters competing in defensive pistol events are required to use practical handguns (including revolvers with barrels up to 6” long) and basic holsters. Maximum magazine capacity is limited to 10 rounds with a minimum of two extra magazines and magazine holders required. It is possible to be competitive in IDPA with a minimum outlay of money.

Most shooting is done using cardboard targets with a qualifying match consisting of 90 rounds. Scoring is based on accuracy and time with penalties for failing to neutralize, failing to use cover, failing to follow safety directions and/or unsportsmanlike conduct. Anyone wishing to participate in this growing sport is required to complete the New Shooter Orientation Course as well as a club level qualifying match.

Club members are encouraged to practice with low-level 22 rimfire handguns as well as their full size competition pistols.
